West Ham: Moyes halts Soucek talks

Tomas Soucek’s long-term future at West Ham is in doubt following contract talks being put on halt by David Moyes.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by 90min, who claim that Soucek’s contract talks have been stalled by Moyes in what could potentially be a bold move with regards to the player’s long-term future at the Hammers.

New contract discussions had begun to motor ahead during the January transfer window, with Moyes and West Ham looking at rewarding the player for his excellent form during his spell so far at the club.

The report by 90min also states that there are two Premier League sides interested in the midfielder, although the clubs are not named.

West Ham would rue not extending Soucek’s contract

The Czech international has scored six times this season, a steady return for a defensive midfielder.

His performances alongside Declan Rice have transformed the Hammers’ fortunes over the previous 18 months and they would be hard-pressed to find another player with his quality for a respectable fee.

The midfielder has played 45 matches for the Premier League side this season as they have exceeded all expectations, closing in on a top-six place and also being through to the Europa League semi-finals.

Moyes may be aiming to persuade players of higher stature to the side following their European success, but this may be detrimental to their finances.

With the 27-year-old being valued at £40.5m and being in the peak years of his career, West Ham could make an exceptional profit on the measly £14.58m fee they paid Slavia Prague for his services two years ago.

However, considering just how important Soucek has proven to be for West Ham since his arrival at the club back in 2020, the argument that losing the services of the midfielder this summer would be a disaster for Moyes and his side is an easy one to make – leading us to believe that West Ham must do everything they can to tie the £47k-per-week man down to a new deal.

Indeed, waving goodbye to the player who Kevin Phillips dubbed a “great asset” at the end of the current campaign is sure to be an outcome that would leave the London Stadium faithful fuming.

Everton transfer news on Min-Jae

Everton officials have reportedly now watched Kim Min-Jae for the second time this season ahead of a potential move in the summer.

The Lowdown: ‘The Monster’

Kim has grown a big reputation in Asian football, as the South Korea international has been nicknamed ‘the Monster’ for his six-foot-three frame and ability to dominate physically and in the air.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-4/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

A few teams from the Premier League and abroad tried to sign the central defender from the Chinese Super League back in 2020, but it was Turkish giants Fenerbahce that managed to land his signature last summer.

The Latest: Officials watch

As per Turkish outlet Fanatik, officials from Goodison Park watched Kim play for the second time this season, when Fenerbahce beat arch-rivals Galatasaray 2-0 on Sunday evening.

They submitted a ‘positive report’ for him at the end of the game, suggesting that they could make their move this summer.

The Verdict: Sign

The Merseyside club could do with a player to help shore up their leaky defence, and Kim would certainly be a good fit.

The Blues scouts would have liked what they saw from him on Sunday, as he recorded eight clearances, two blocked shots and five accurate long balls, while the 25-year-old also made two interceptions and had a controlled 86 touches of the ball in total (SofaScore).

His reputation suggests that he could be the dominant centre-back that Frank Lampard needs, in order to make sure that his team are not fighting for relegation again next season.

Newcastle: Keith Downie’s Dean Henderson claim

Dean Henderson would likely replace Martin Dubravka if he joined Newcastle from Manchester United, Keith Downie says.

The lowdown

Newcastle held talks with The Red Devils over a loan move for Henderson in January but couldn’t reach an agreement.

However, The Northern Echo’s Scott Wilson reported in March that Howe intends to return with a permanent offer for the Englishman this summer.

The manager wants to strengthen his goalkeeping department and has considered moves for Arsenal’s Bernd Leno and West Brom’s Sam Johnstone, but Henderson is his primary target ‘by some distance’.

Playing second fiddle to David de Gea, the player is unhappy with his situation at Old Trafford.

The 25-year-old still has more than three years left to run on his contract and is valued at £16.2million by Transfermarkt.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-6/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The latest

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Sky Sports’ North-East England reporter said he couldn’t see Henderson joining Newcastle as a deputy. Instead, he’d probably arrive as the new no. 1, displacing Dubravka.

“You’d be surprised if someone like Dean Henderson came in as number two,” Downie said.

“Yes, he’s number two at Manchester United, but I’m not sure that would be the case here.”

The verdict

If Howe isn’t satisfied with Dubravka, then Henderson would be a good bet as a replacement.

He has 29 games’ worth of experience at a top club, keeping 13 clean sheets, and is also an England international, having made his debut in November 2020.

Indeed, moving to St James’ Park and becoming a first-choice ‘keeper could help his prospects no-end ahead of the World Cup in Qatar.

Former team-mate Sander Berge has provided a glowing review of Henderson that will surely excite the Magpies.

“He’s insane,” the Sheffield United man said during Hendersn’s loan spell. “I’ve never been with such a good goalkeeper. One thing in matches, he is almost a defence alone at times, and you feel so secure with him.

“But people have to see him at training. It’s crazy. He saves balls from one yard. Sometimes I am completely speechless by how good he is. It’s like having two goalkeepers in goal with him. He’s awesome.”In other news, a transfer insider drops a Philippe Coutinho claim concerning NUFC.

International fixtures thwart IPL ambition for England stars

Being World Twenty20 champions and beating Australia 3-1 in the Ashes has not proved a path to IPL riches for England’s cricketers as their international schedule again hampered their chances of big-money deals

Andrew McGlashan10-Jan-2011Being World Twenty20 champions and beating Australia 3-1 in the Ashes has not proved a path to IPL riches for England’s cricketers as their international schedule again hampered their chances of big-money deals. Paul Collingwood, who retired from Test cricket after Sydney, is the only major name available for the whole tournament and secured a US$250,000 deal with Rajasthan Royals but Kevin Pietersen took a significant pay cut in a deal with Deccan Chargers.IPL franchises are becoming increasingly savvy as to how they spend their money and want a strong return on their investments which means players being available for long chunks. Along with Pietersen and Collingwood, Eoin Morgan (Kolkata Knight Riders, US$350,000) and Stuart Broad (Kings XI Punjab, US$400,000) are the star-name England players to earn deals but won’t be available for the end of the tournament.”The players have to be back to prepare for the Test match at the end of May so that will have affected the bids,” Collingwood said. “Ideally it would be fantastic if all the players could be involved 100% on a level playing field. That’s not going happen probably in the next few years because of the schedules that are coming up. It’s great that there are more English players in the auction this time even if it hasn’t worked out hugely for them.”Ten of the victorious Twenty20 side which beat Australia in the Barbados final, along with James Anderson, were among the English players who went into this year’s auction. Pietersen, who two years ago shared the tag of the world’s most expensive cricketer alongside Andrew Flintoff after being bought for US$1.55million, was worth US$650,000 to Decann Chargers. There was a suggestion that some may have over-priced themselves, such as Michael Yardy whose base was US$400,000. However, Collingwood was confident that there wouldn’t be any impact within the team because of a few that did get lucky.”I don’t think so,” he said. “As we’ve seen a lot of the guys wanted to get involved. I don’t think anyone begrudges anyone anything. Sometimes it’s a bit of a lottery who gets picked. You never really know the reasons. Chris Gayle wasn’t picked, either. Nobody is having a go at one else.”Anderson missed out despite his superb Ashes series and England’s players have had an uneasy relationship with the IPL since being unable to take part in the inaugural event. Although there is a far larger gap than in previous years for them to compete, there remains a clash with the county season which starts in early April as well as the early summer internationals. It’s not only England’s players who have been snubbed – Chris Gayle is the biggest absentee from the event after he didn’t attract a bid due to West Indies hosting Pakistan in April – but it was clear from the number of England stars who put their names forward that there was major interest in taking part. And it still remains possible that those with IPL deals may not be released to appear after Andy Flower, the England team director, made it abundantly clear that he had the final call and would demand players rest if they needed it.Broad is probably the player with the biggest cloud over him because he is currently recovering from the stomach injury that ruled him out of the final three Ashes Tests and is battling to be fit for the World Cup. Flower may not be keen for him to race off to the IPL for six weeks ahead of another packed home season.”I do not blame any of the players for wanting to go and play,” Flower told reporters in Australia. “But it is tricky because the schedules are so heavy. Rest is sometimes as important as the hard schedules we put them through, especially for our front-line attack. They have made themselves available for the IPL but it is dangerous in terms of the risk of injury and shortening their lifespan.”However, one of the quirks of the IPL, whereby arch enemies on the field can become team-mates, was thrown up by the auction result with Collingwood now set to join forces with Shane Warne at Rajasthan. Warne hasn’t always been complementary about Collingwood, especially when he was awarded an MBE for his one-Test role in the 2005 Ashes, and Collingwood offered a wry smile. “At least now we can get to know each other rather than just having battles on the field.”

Everton: Paul Brown drops Allan exit claim

Allan’s mooted Everton exit should not come as a surprise, journalist Paul Brown has told GiveMeSport.

The lowdown

TuttoMercatoWeb journalist Niccolo Ceccarini recently reported (via Sport Witness) that the Toffees could well put the Brazilian midfielder up for sale when the summer transfer window opens.

The 31-year-old is under ‘strong consideration’ at Lazio as they assess potential replacements for exit-bound Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

Allan left another Serie A outfit in Napoli to join Everton in a £21.7m deal in September 2020, reuniting with Carlo Ancelotti on Merseyside. He has gone on to make 56 appearances for the club, including 25 Premier League starts this season.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-5/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The latest

Brown doesn’t believe that it would be wise for Everton to hand Allan a long-term contract extension, particularly if he demands a pay rise.

The journalist told GiveMeSport: “I’m not surprised he’s leaving and it would be foolish to stick him on a longer contract.

“He would probably want more in terms of a salary too, so it doesn’t surprise me that he will go.”

The verdict

To a degree, it would be a surprise to see Allan being sold, given the extent of his involvement in the top flight this season. With three starts in Everton’s last four matches, during which they have picked up seven points, he certainly isn’t out of favour under Frank Lampard.

Indeed, it was only this time last year that BT Sport commentator Darren Fletcher was describing him as a ‘vital’ player for the club.

However, his contract is due to expire in just over 13 months’ time, so Everton may view this summer as their final opportunity to cash in on him. Come next January, Allan will be able to negotiate pre-contract terms with other clubs if he is still with the Toffees.

The Brazilian earns £70,000 per week at Goodison Park and, as Brown says, it may not be regarded as financially prudent to prolong that lucrative contract into his mid-30s.

IPL sells title rights to PepsiCo for $71m

The BCCI has sold the title sponsorship of the IPL for the next five years to PepsiCo for Rs. 396.8 crore

Nagraj Gollapudi21-Nov-2012Global beverage giant PepsiCo has bagged the IPL title sponsorship rights for the next five years (2013-17) for Rs 396.8 crore ($71.77 million approx), almost double the original title sponsorship deal done in 2008. Along with PepsiCo, the only other contender for the title sponsorships rights was Airtel, an Indian telecommunications company, who bid Rs 316 crore ($57.27 million approx). For the next five years the tournament is to be called Pepsi-IPL.In 2008, DLF, Indian’s biggest real estate company, had paid a sum of Rs 200 crore ($36.25 million approx), to own title rights for the first five years (2008-12) of the tournament. But in August DLF decided not to renew its contract, forcing the BCCI to issue a new tender. The BCCI had set Rs 300 crore as the base price for the title sponsorship.”So far our record of selling various properties of IPL has been very good,” IPL governing council chairman Rajiv Shukla said after a meeting of BCCI’s marketing committee in Mumbai. “We have doubled, tripled or quadrupled the amount while selling some of the properties,” Shukla said. Gautham Mukkavilli, CEO, Beverages, PepsiCo India region, said that in a country where “cricket was a religion,” the IPL had become the “most revered temple where the faithful flock to.”The news of the new title sponsorship was approved of by the IPL franchises, who believe the Pepsi deal will have a positive effect on their own businesses. Raghu Iyer, the chief financial officer at Rajasthan Royals, said the new title sponsorship will, “ignite the market” for the franchises. “It is absolutely double the value. What was expected was one-half-times what DLF paid, but these guys have paid something like 80-crore mark (per year)… IPL needed this kind of positive reinstatement from a global brand like Pepsi.”Venky Mysore, the CEO of Kolkata Knight Riders, said the title sponsorship would add “tremendous value” to both the league as well as the global beverage brand. “It is terrific news that they have come on board. Pepsi would have done their homework. They know their numbers and they would have clearly seen some value,” Mysore said.According to Mysore the value addition and the returns on Pepsi’s investment would be manifold. “There are analytical models that we also use to show our brands who are associated with our franchise in terms on what their return on investment is. Leave aside the fact that it is an association with a marquee product (IPL) and the synergies that brings, if you look at just pure advertisement value and the kind of the exposure that happens leading upto the IPL, during the IPL and then the rub-off effect of it continuing on, there is a very clear way of calculating what the value of that exposure is. That is how you calculate the return on investment. Pepsi would get at least five times the exposure it would normally get,” Mysore said. After DLF let the deadline of July 28 (meant for the renewal of the title sponsorship contract) pass, speculation grew about whether the value of the IPL as a brand was shrinking. The timing of that news coincided with the controversy surrounding the Deccan Chargers franchise. According to TAM Sports, a division of TAM Research, one of the leading television ratings agencies, the overall tournament rating for the fifth IPL was 3.45, compared to 3.51 the previous year – far from the TVR of 5.51 reached in 2010. The telecommunications pair of Airtel and Nokia had decided to not renew their annual title sponsorship of the Champions League Twenty20, adding weight to the growing perception that the IPL was no longer a valuable property. The new title sponsorship with Pepsi silenced those doubts. According to a senior official from a different franchise, who did not want to be identified, despite all the negative colours IPL had been painted in, the league has always achieved what it wanted. “People have spoken negative about IPL but in the end everybody has paid the money which we have always asked for. We have never had problems at getting sponsors at our price. I will get it even in future. People will still talk so it is best we keep quiet,” the official said. “Pepsi will not put in money unless they are sure about their numbers, isn’t it? They are putting hardcore cash. Pepsi operates not only in India. It is a global giant and they would have done their studies,” the official pointed out.

Injury forces Haddin out of England ODIs

Australian wicketkeeper Brad Haddin has been ruled out of the five-ODI series against England starting later this month due to an elbow injury that prevents him from picking up a bat

Cricinfo staff05-Jun-2010Australia’s wicketkeeper Brad Haddin has been ruled out of the five-ODI series against England starting later this month due to an elbow injury that prevents him from picking up a bat. Tim Paine, the Tasmania gloveman, will take Haddin’s place in the one-dayers and will be in line for a Test debut if Haddin fails to recover in time for the two Tests against Pakistan in July.Haddin said the problem flared up three months ago when he smashed a century against New Zealand in a one-dayer, but didn’t have enough time off the game to give his elbow sufficient rest.”It’s like having tennis elbow,” Haddin told the . ”It has gradually deteriorated to the point where I can’t hold a bat. The frustrating thing about it is I can still wicketkeep – everything else is fine – but I can’t pick up a cricket bat and to play cricket you have to be able to bat.”I had to wait a bit after the [Twenty20] World Cup to allow it calm down, it [the tendon] was pretty angry because we played constant cricket. I have to basically get the strength back into it [the tendon] and see how it responds.”Australia play England between June 22 and July 3 before taking on Pakistan for two Twenty20s and two Tests. Though Haddin was confident of recovering in time to take on Pakistan, he was keen not to rush back too soon and would be focusing largely on the Ashes at home in November-December.”I’m hopeful I can be ready for Pakistan, but if I’m not I’ll have eight weeks to get the strength back [in time for the Australian summer],” Haddin said. ”I have a series of exercises that are designed to do that.”Australia’s physio Alex Kountouris added: “Brad has been struggling with tendon elbow pain (tennis elbow) while batting during the ICC Twenty20 World Cup. As with most tendon injuries, time is required to allow the pain to settle and gradually increase the tendon load.”As such, Brad will not be taking part in the ODI matches against Ireland and England. His availability for the Twenty20 internationals and Tests matches against Pakistan in the UK will be dependent on his progress over the next few weeks.”Paine’s call-up to the one-day team has also allowed Matthew Wade, the Victoria wicketkeeper, to take his place in the Australia A squad to take on Sri Lanka A later this month. The promotion of Wade, 22, is a strong indication that Graham Manou has fallen down the pecking order despite making his Test debut in the Ashes last year.

Celtic: O’Rourke urges club to keep coach

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has urged Celtic to offer a new deal to keep first-team coach Gavin Strachan at Parkhead.

The lowdown: Strachan a favourite of Celtic’s board

The 43-year-old survived a coaching staff overhaul and has since continued to impress in the role of first-team coach following the departure of Neil Lennon in February 2021 and the subsequent arrival of Ange Postecoglou.

A recent report from Football Insider claimed that the Parkhead hierarchy were keen to secure Strachan’s long-term future at the club and have duly opened contract talks with him, given his status as as a highly-regarded figure in Glasgow.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/key-latest-celtic-updates-3/” title=”Key latest Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

As the Bhoys set their sights on a 52nd Premiership crown to add to their Scottish League Cup success from earlier in the campaign, there could also be positive off-field developments in the near future…

The latest: O’Rourke endorses Strachan extension

Speaking to GiveMeSport, O’Rourke has implored Celtic to persuade Strachan to stay on.

The reporter outlined: “I think it would be a positive move for Celtic. It would just keep that continuity within the coaching group right now.

“If they can agree a new contract, it will just keep things ticking over nicely for everybody involved there.”

The verdict: He’s right

As the summer fast approaches and the managerial merry-go-round begins to fire up, the Hoops should be acting fast to appease the former Doncaster Rovers man after he turned down the opportunity to manage English League Two outfit Hartlepool United back in November.

Postecoglou is clearly onto something with the current setup at Lennoxtown, and retaining the status quo within the coaching ranks is equally as important as keeping hold of key players.

Having endured a torrid 2020/21 campaign, Celtic have been crying out for stability, and as such the club should be doing everything to keep the likes of Strachan, assistant manager John Kennedy and coach Stephen McManus in place at Parkhead.

Wolves reject Traore bid from Spurs

Having secured deals for the likes of Chiquinho and Hayao Kawabe during the current January transfer window, it seems as though Wolves are now making moves to try and keep hold of one of their current players.

What’s the news?

Speaking live on The Transfer Show on Sky Sports, journalist Kaveh Solhekol revealed that Wolves have rejected an offer of £15m from fellow Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur for Adama Traore.

Solhekol then claimed that the Old Gold would be looking at a bid of around £25m in order to consider selling Traore this month.

Having signed the winger for a fee of £18m from Championship club Middlesbrough back in 2018, it’s no surprise that Wolves have rejected an offer which is less than what they paid for him, especially one which would see him join another Premier League team who are only five points ahead of them in the table at this stage of the campaign.

Since joining the Old Gold, Traore has gone on to make 153 appearances for the club across all competitions, scoring 11 goals and providing 18 assists in the process.

Lage will be delighted

Even though Traore only scored one goal in 19 Premier League appearances this season, which came during their recent 3-1 win over Southampton, Wolves manager Bruno Lage will surely be happy that the club have reportedly turned down this offer from Tottenham for the Spain international.

Despite the lack of goal output, the 25-year-old has still been a top performer for his side with an overall season rating of 6.97/10 from WhoScored, making him Wolves’ fourth-highest rated player.

Moving forward, it will be a big boost for Wolves and Lage to have Traore in their squad for the remainder of the season, given the level of performance he has produced for them despite the lack of regular goals and assists.

However, with his contract set to expire in the summer of 2023 and the reported lack of intent to sign a new deal at Molineux, it could be worth the club selling him in the next summer transfer window so that they can get a suitable transfer fee for him and also have the time to find the right replacement for him.
